6th Grade band is a Rootstown child first introduction to formal "concert" band.  It's during this time that they are introduced to a variety of instruments to see which on best fits them and their unique personality.  During the year we start to work on basic music theory, dynamics, tempo, time signatures, and key signatures.  Perhaps the most challenging and exciting is learning to read music.  For most this is their first introduction to a 2nd language.

Music is vitally important for children and young adults.  At Rootstown, during their middle school years, students are required to participate in band, chores, or a general music class as part of the curriculum.  Why might you ask?

It's simple, students that participate in music perform better in school;

The College Entrance Examination Board found that students involved in public school music programs scored 107 points higher on the SAT's than students with no participation.
- Profiles of SAT and Achievement Test Takers, The College Board,
compiled by the Music Educators National Conference (2002)

U.S. Department of Education data on more than 25,000 secondary school students found that students who report consistent high levels of involvement in instrumental music over the middle and high school years show "significantly higher levels of mathematics proficiency by grade 12."
- U.S. Department of Education NELLS88 Database

6th Grade band celebrates our students' hard work with 3 concerts during the year.  It is our sincere hope that you and your child join us in starting what may end up being a life-long passion.
